In Which I Don't Know Enough Words...

For whatever reason, there are a lot of links floating around the near-viral parts of the internet that involve using quizzes to estimate how many words you know, in various languages. I'm fascinated by word nerd shit like this, so I thought I'd share and brag, appropriately.

This one says I know 87% of the words in the English language.

This one says my estimated vocabulary is 38,800 English words. Considering that there are 250,000 English words in common usage and 87% of that is NOT 38,800, somebody is lying to me.

This one says I know about 40,000 words as well. Okay.

Now for the other languages...

According to this, I apparently know 25,158 words in the French language, about half. That is far higher than I'd estimate, especially these days, and encouraging...but I did start wondering about the linguistic validity of these tests as opposed to their statistical validity about halfway through this one.

I couldn't find tests for either Spanish or Korean, but I'd estimate my Spanish vocabulary at about 5000 words and my Korean vocabulary at about 2000, most of those latently acquired in both cases. (As in, I'd recognize them if I heard them, but would have a hard time producing a vocabulary list.)

This makes me want to lock myself in a house with dictionaries for a week.

What were your results?
